Career record from Faki

Pittsburgh’s sophomore student-athlete had a career night.

The 2018 NCAA D1 Volleyball Tournament is in progress, whence the NCAA D1 national championship team will be crowned this season (https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/volleyball-women/d1/2018). After the first two rounds, most favorites are in the “Sweet Sixteen”, but there also were some upsets. 

Creighton (ranked ninth nationally) with a record 29-4 was defeated in an emphatic way (3-0) by Washington with a record 19-12, San Diego with a 17-12 record blocked (3-0) the University of Southern California (11th nationally) with a record of 22-10! Pittsburgh (ranked 12th nationally) with overall record 30-1 was defeated 3-2 by Michigan with a record 23-8. In this match, a 20-year-old Greek student-athlete, Zoe Faki, set a new personal best for points.

Efrosini Alexakou, Ariadni Kathariou (St. John's University), Elena Karakasi (Syracuse), and Georgia Tselepi-Chrysanthi Stamatiou (Cincinnati) also completed their season for the year.

Elena Karakasi

Good showing by Syracuse University in its first participation in the 2018 NCAA Volleyball Tournament, as the team progressed to the second round of the tournament. In the first round the University of Elena Karakasi defeated Yale with 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-16), and then lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-16) to legendary and annually competing for the title Penn State (23-7). The historic season was completed for the Syracuse Orange with a record of 19-9.

Pittsburgh also completed its 2018 NCAA Volleyball Tournament participation. Although Pitt had the potential to move to the final phase, the Panthers fell victim to a surprise upset in the second round. Firstly, Pittsburgh easily defeated 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-15) Iona (20-7), but then lost 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 21- 25, 15-9) to Michigan (23-8). The 20-year-old, playing as a starting outside hitter set career records for Pittsburg in the second match with 13 points (12/33 attacks, 2 blocks and 23 digs). Pittsburgh finished the season with an overall record of 30-2!


Georgia Tselepi - Chrysanthi Stamatiou

In the second round of the NCAA D1 Volleyball Tournament, Cincinnati’s season concluded. Cincinnati defeated Illinois State University (25-7) 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22), while in the following match the Bearcats were defeated 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16) by the very strong, ranked 14th nationally, Marquette (26-6). Chrysanthi Stamatiou played in all six sets of matches, scoring one point. Cincinnati closed the season with a record 26-8, one of the best in its history.

St. John's University participated in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, but did not manage to overcome the obstacle of the College Of Charleston (22-11) by losing 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 24-26, 18-25). The New York team had an excellent serve (10-3 aces), but it was not enough to move on to the next phase with College Of Charleston having double blocks (5-10) and more points from attacks (52-62). Alexakou scored 17 points (16/48 attacks, one ace, 13 digs) while Kathariou had another very good game with 8 points (6/15 attacks, one ace, 2 blocks, 2 digs). That was the last match of the season for St. John's University which had an overall record of 23-12.
